Barcelona vs Real Madrid - El Clasico; arguably the biggest game in world football between arguably the two biggest teams in world football, with the best players in the sport facing off against each other in a mammoth battle. No game stirs the emotions quite like this one does.

The rivalry between these two footballing giants goes far beyond what happens on the pitch. The hatred between the players and the opposing fans is immeasurable and is exactly what makes this game such a tense and hostile encounter.

However, despite the understandable distaste for each other, fans and players tend to take the rivalry a step too far at times. With the adrenaline running high, thoughts and all forms of reasoning go out the window and actions that could have severe consequences are taken. This time, Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal proved to be the culprit.

Barcelona needed to win this game to cut short the six-point gap between them and table toppers Real Madrid, and were all set to do just that. Having had a quiet first half, the Catalans took the lead in the 52nd minute thanks to a Luis Suarez header from a Neymar free-kick. However, in classic style, captain Sergio Ramos proved to be Los Blancos’ hero in the dying moments of the game yet again, scoring a header from a Luka Modric free-kick in the 90th minute of the clash.

As in every clash between rival teams, fans take the opportunity to throw as many insults as possible in the direction of the opposition players, and it was no different here either. And following Ramos’ heroic leap to rescue a point for Real Madrid, Carvajal let his emotions get the better of him. While the Madrid players were huddled up together celebrating their captain’s last gasp equaliser, Carvajal stuck up his middle finger in the direction of the Barcelona fans.

However, the 24-year-old Spanish right-back was quick to apologise, admitting that his actions were inappropriate. Posting on his Twitter page, Carvajal said:

I would like to apologize for the gesture to a section of the stand responding to the insults. This is something that should not be done.”

His actions may well have landed him in hot water with the authorities, and it is yet to be seen as to whether he will face charges for the inappropriate gesture.
