David Beckham voted 'Sexiest Man Alive' by People magazine

David Beckham being introduced as 2015's Sexiest Man Alive during a popular talk show

Former Manchester United legend David Beckham has been named the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by People Magazine. Beckham is among only three non-actors to have been recognised as such by the magazine since it instituted the award in 1985 and he was introduced as 2015’s honoree during the popular American talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Late John F.Kennedy Jr. (1988) and singer Adam Levine (2013) were the other two celebrities to be awarded this honour.

It may not have been a goal, but the 40-year-old scored big-time ‘off-the-pitch’ on Tuesday when he became the first athlete to be named by the weekly Amercian magazine’s ‘sexiest man alive’. Not only is he a global superstar and a devoted husband, but he’s a father of four as well.

“It’s a huge honour,” he tells ‘People’ on scoring the 30th anniversary Sexiest Man crown.

“I’m very pleased to accept. I would honestly like to thank my parents for bringing me into this world.

“I want to thank my hairdresser, my stylist …” he added jokingly.

I never felt that I’m an attractive person: Beckham

The ex-England skipper has dabbled in occasional modelling since his playing days and he has signed lucrative endorsement deals with companies like Adidas, Pepsi, Samsung over the years. But his passion for modelling continued even after his retirement in 2013 as he appeared for Calvin Klein and H&M. Becks, as he is popularly known in England, has been a sex symbol for nearly two decades.

“I never feel that I'm an attractive, sexy person," he added.

“I mean I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don't ever think of myself that way.”

The humble British heartthrob shared the news with his wife Victoria Beckham, who was a member of the famous British pop band Spice Girls and is a fashion mogul.

“I would hope that she feels this way about me all the time anyway!” he said with a shy smile on his face. “But she said, 'Congratulations!'”

“We kind of laughed about it with the boys and the boys kind of laughed at me and said, 'Really?! Sexiest man alive? Really?'”

Beckham is father to Brooklyn aged 16, Romeo (12), Cruz (10) and Harper (4) and he has admitted that his eldest son has been poking fun at his latest honour.

“Brooklyn was the one who was like, 'Are you sure it's not me that's meant to be there today?'” said Beckham.
