David de Gea: Manchester United are right for me

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has revealed that he broke into tears when he was first sold to the club, after leaving Atletico Madrid in a £18 million deal in 2011. While he also revealed that he had to join Man United, to progress his career.

De Gea came through the youth ranks at the Vicente Calderon and he was highly-rated in the capital. However, Manchester United came in and enquired for the Spanish shot-stopper and with Atletico struggling financially, the club accepted an offer for De Gea’s services.

De Gea struggled heavily when he first came to the country and was under heavy scrutiny following some calamitous mistakes. However, the Spanish international has excelled ever since and has established himself as one of the best in the league.

De Gea is currently training with the Spanish national side as they prepare for this summers World Cup in Brazil. De Gea is a part of Del Bosque’s 23-man squad, which lost 5-1 to the Netherlands in the opening World Cup game.

De Gea revealed he was upset when he first left his boyhood club.

He told the reporters: “Yes [I cried]. I had spent the whole of my life at one club and it was difficult for me to leave.

“But joining Manchester United was a step I had to take, and I know I made the right decision.

“Atleti’s season was exceptional – difficult to repeat. I feel very proud of Atlético.

“My feelings towards Atlético couldn’t be much clearer and I enjoyed last season just the same as the rest of Atleti’s fans did.”
