David de Gea: Playing in the Premier League has helped me improve my game

David de Gea has said that the Premier League has helped him improve his game

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has said that he doesn't wish to join La Liga giants Real Madrid for the time being.

There have been reports of him making a possible move back to his home country Spain, to play for the Los Blancos and clarifying the reports, the winner of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2013-14 said that the Premier League has been very good for him and that he wants to focus on the present.

“Premier League has made me a better goalkeeper”

The 24-year-old was bought for a sum of £17.8 million from current La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has been one of the shining lights for the Red Devils, in what has been a up-and-down season for them so far.

Talking about playing in England, he said that he has improved considerably in the last four years and the one gets to learn a lot by playing in the United Kingdom (UK).

“Truth be told, English football has changed me a great deal. I was very young when I came here, but four years on, things are very good overall. This league really suits me, as you learn a lot here.

“I've developed a lot physically, greatly improved my concentration and generally improved all aspects of my game,” de Gea said.

The Red Devils signed Barcelona veteran Victor Valdes in January this year on an initial 18-month deal and speaking about working with his fellow Spaniard, the goalkeeper said that he is getting to learn a lot from Valdes and he’s always willing to help him out with his game.

“Victor Valdes and I work very well together -- I'm very happy to be with him. I'm learning so much from him, not just in goalkeeping terms given his immense experience, but also as a person.

"He's a very straightforward guy with a lot of character. Moreover, he's always ready to lend a hand, trying to help out with his advice, especially during games,” he said.

Want to help Spain win trophies in the future: De Gea

De Gea also expressed relief at getting to be part of the World Cup squad last year and although he was the only member who didn't get to play, he said that he wants to be play in the quadrennial event in the future and also win trophies.

"Thank God I was fortunate enough to be selected for Brazil... Well, the memory is a bittersweet one. I was really excited with it being my first full World Cup, but the result is obviously one to forget.

“On top of that, I injured myself out there. A World Cup can be very difficult. You need to go into it in very good form and play with immense focus. Otherwise, the smallest things could have you on a flight home,” he said.

"I want to play at a World Cup and not just go as a squad member. I want to win titles for my club and country as that's what makes a footballer great. I still have so much to do in my career,” he added.
