The former Manchester United boss, who was sacked owing to United’s dismal run of form under his leadership has given vent to his desires by saying that he “would take” the United job again.

David Moyes had taken charge of Old Trafford in May 2013 after Sir Alex Ferguson had retired. He remained in his post till April 2014 before being sacked, as the defending champions fell to 7th spot in the league table.

Appearing on The Clare Balding Show on BT Sport, Moyes was asked if he would’ve done things differently at Manchester United in retrospect. He replied,

“I wouldn’t have done anything different. I would have only done it different if I’d known it was 10 months instead of 6 years.”

“Would I take the job again? Of course I would. There are very few managers in the world who wouldn’t want to manage Manchester United.”

Illusion of United being patient

Moyes went on to say that he was under the impression that at a club like Manchester United he would get all the time he needed. Even if teams lower down the league visited Old Trafford and snatched an odd victory, the club and its fans would stick to “The Chosen One”.

“My understanding was that I was going to a club which always looked after their managers, even when they were in trouble and it wasn’t going well, you got your time to sort things out. I was under that illusion when I was there.”

“I had a great group of players they had recently won the Premier League under Sir Alex, but it was going to take time for that to change, evolve and of course there was going to have to be a changeover of players in time, but it couldn’t be done in 10 months.

“After Sir Alex the job was going to be very difficult. It was going to take time to rebuild, it was a rebuilding job at Manchester United.”

“You’ve got to remember David Gill left, he was a big influence at Manchester United. I think even what Manchester United stand for, is they keep their managers, they’ve always supported their managers.”

Louis van Gaal deserves time

Moyes also backed Louis van Gaal, hoping that the Dutchman can turn things around. Under Van Gaal, United have struggled to find the net with regularity, with the last game against Chelsea being their seventh draw of the season. They sit 5th in the league table.

Despite wanting the United job for himself, Moyes hopes that United’s board afford the Dutchman more patience than he himself received, saying “I hope they stick with Louis Van Gaal, he deserves more time.

“It’s still a work in progress for him, he’s made some signings. From my experience in Spain it will take time for players from abroad to settle in.”

“I think they should stick with it. They don’t want to become a club which continuously changes their manager.”
