Did the official Champions League Twitter account just unintentionally troll Lionel Messi?

Lionel Messi trolled Champions League
Lionel Messi and Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals

The Champions League is back with two semi-final matches to be played over two legs. Real Madrid travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City for the first leg on Tuesday night while Atletico Madrid will host Bayern Munich on Wednesday night at the Vicente Calderon.

Surprisingly, all four teams reached the semi-finals having beaten their opponents 3-2 on aggregate. And one such opponent who was knocked out were defending champions Barcelona who won the first leg 2-1 before La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid roared back in the second leg to win 2-0.

The result sees yet another opportunity lost for a team to defend their European crown – a feat yet to be achieved in the Champions League era.

As the world gets set for two epic clashes, fans around the world will be glued to their television sets. And apparently, so will Barcelona star Lionel Messi. At least, according to the official Champions League account.

Lays is one of the sponsors of the Champions League and Messi is a brand ambassador having appeared in television commercials. But to use this clip for a game involving Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid seems a little ironic.
