Didier Drogba of Chelsea (L) celebrates with Willian of Chelsea as he scores their fourth goal during the UEFA Champions League Group G match

Didier Drogba scored his 50th goal in European competitions on Tuesday evening in Chelsea’s 5-0 win over Schalke 04 in their Group G match. Chelsea topped the group and have proceeded to the knock-out stage.

Chelsea frontman Didier Drogba, who came off the bench to score Chelsea's fourth goal of the night also became the 1st African footballer to achieve the milestone. Cameroon striker Samuel Eto is the only other African player who is in the list of top 50 goal scorers in all European tournaments.

The Ivorian centre forward was instrumental in Chelsea’s victory over Bayern Munich to win the Champions League in 2012. Drogba, a big-game specialist, scored a thundering header into the top corner of Neuer’s goal from Mata’s 88th-minute corner which equalised the match at the Aliaz Arena and Chelsea then went on to win the match 4-3 on penalties.

Argentinian great Lionel Messi and Drogba are the only two non-European footballers to score 50 or more goals in European competitions.

Sky Sports reported the record in a tweet on their profile:
