League one side Doncaster Rovers recently lost their manager, Dean Saunders, to Wolverhampton Wanderers. One thing they haven’t seem to have lost though is their sense of good humour, and cheerful spirit. Currently sitting second in the league table, level on points with Tranmere, but with a game in hand, Doncaster decided to consider the application of 8-year-old Mac Wilson, whose family thought it would be a nice bit of fun to apply.

The current record for youngest manager in The Football League is held by Karl Robinson, manager of MK Dons, who will rest easy knowing that his record (having become a manager at 29 years of age) is under no real threat.

Little did they expect the school kid’s application to be taken seriously by the Rovers, who will no doubt have earned more admiration among their fans after this incident.

Mac’s dad, Adi, told the Doncaster Free Press: “We sent the email off as a bit of fun, then the phone rang! I answered it and couldn’t believe it when John said he was getting in touch with Mac about the manager’s job.

“I put Mac on and he thought it was a wind-up, convinced his older brother was playing a trick on him. He went a bit shy but Mr Ryan was obviously very impressed and said he wanted him to come in for an interview.”

Ryan added:“Mac actually put in his letter that he will get us in the Premier League in three years – I thought that was a very positive statement.

“I was a mad Rovers fan when I was eight and would have loved it if the chairman back then, whoever it was, had contacted me – I would have been in awe. It’s nice when you do things like that because people do remember.”
