Emilio Izaguirre: Manchester United Made Approach In January, Might Follow Up

Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre says he expects Manchester United to try and sign him during the summer, after they failed with an approach in January. The defender said that Sir Alex Ferguson had enquired about the possibility of a transfer in January, and he would welcome a move to the England champions if they decided to make another advance.

Izaguirre reveals that Man United might make approach

Speaking to Honduran newspaper El Heraldo, Izaguirre said that he was in regular contact with his agent who was weighing up his options carefully before making a decision. He stated that he wouldn’t reveal the details of any potential move and would remain silent, as he had when he moved to Scotland.

“Every day I speak to my agent and he asks me how I am. I’m also waiting to see how my work will go with Celtic,”

“I don’t talk about that [speculation surrounding possible moves to other clubs]. The move to Celtic happened and I kept quiet. If I have to move then I will welcome it and I will be grateful to God, and I will take advantage.”

The defender refused to acknowledge interest from any other club, but admitted that the enquiry from Manchester United in January was genuine. He said that the deal didn’t pan out at that time because Patrice Evra signed a new contract with the Red Devils, and also because Celtic were keen to keep Izaguirre for the rest of the season.

Izaguirre has no problem staying on with Celtic as well, and said that he’ll continue donning the green and white stripes next season if a Man United deal doesn’t work out.

“I don’t know [of any interest from other clubs], but the Manchester United thing is true. [United boss Sir Alex] Ferguson asked about me and spoke to my team to see what my situation was, but at that time Patrice Evra hadn’t signed [a new contract], but then he renewed and there was nothing more.”

“Manchester United looked for me but Celtic told them no because they wanted me for that season, but they said that they could speak in July, so now we’ll see what happens with me. If not I’ll stay at the club.”

Izaguirre had a stellar first season in Scotland, scooping up four player awards and forming an important part of Celtic’s core group of players. He confessed that he still had a dream of conquering Scotland, and he would follow that dream with all his heart if a move to England didn’t transpire.

“I’m happy in Scotland and my agent is the one who is working on that [possible transfers] because I want to fulfil my contract until the end with Celtic, if nothing else comes up.

“I came here with the dream of triumphing in Scotland and I’m doing that. That’s the important thing for me at the moment.”

Stay tuned to find out what Izaguirre’s future has in store for him, Celtic and Manchester United.
