England had a disastrous Euro 2016 campaign

Arsenal and England footballer Jack Wilshere has conceded that England players deserve to be booed after a horrific Euro 2016 campaign. The midfielder was a part of Roy Hodgson’s squad that suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Iceland in the competition being staged in France.

Wilshere spoke at the Premier League’s launch day and admitted that a number of flop players will receive some stick during away matches. He also went on to state that they would have to work hard to gain back the trust of the country. He said, “Of course we let the fans down. We know that England fans are passionate, and they are going to show their frustration towards us.” The midfielder added: “We want to win the trust of the country back — and we really need the country to get behind us for the World Cup qualifiers.”

The Arsenal star further added, “We know that we didn’t reach the heights that the country expected us to meet. We didn’t perform. And for us as well, the main thing is to look at ourselves.”

Wilshere though feels that with Sam Allardyce’s appointment as head coach, things are bound to get better. “I am happy with him, I think it’s important that the England manager is English”, he said.

"I have worked under Fabio Capello and Hodgson and they were both great, but I think it’s important that he [the manager] is English and he shares the same passion as all of us. He knows what playing for England is all about, and I’m looking forward, if selected, to working with him.”

Wilshere also added that his primary goal would be to have an injury free season and play as many games as possible for Arsenal. The 24-year-old had a dreadful 2015/16 campaign after picking up an injury just a day before the Community Shield.

The young Arsenal midfielder is looking to make up for lost time though and hopes to be fit to face Liverpool in the season opener. An integral part of the Arsenal midfield, Wilshere expects the side to challenge for the title, if not go all the way this season.

“We finished second last year and we are confident that we can take any team on in this league.”

Arsenal host Liverpool on August 14th in what promises to be a cracking first week of the season.
