Alexander Buttner has left Manchester United to join Russian side Dynamo Moscow, claiming that he wants to ‘play in the Champions League and win trophies.’

Buttner, 25, joined Man United in 2012 as back-up to Patrice Evra but only appeared 13 times in the Premier League and played in just 28 games in total. He is seen as a huge flop at Old Trafford and confused many by claiming he won 14 Man of the Match awards in 15 appearances last season.

He came through the much-heralded youth system at Ajax before playing for Vitesse Arnhem from 2008 to 2012 and signing a five-year deal with Man United. He won the Premier League in his first season but struggled under David Moyes and Ryan Giggs last season.

He makes the move away from Man United, joining fellow defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in leaving the club this summer and has relocated to Moscow. The final stages and details of the contract have not been finalised yet but Buttner has already joined up with his new side on their training camp in Austria.

“I want to play in the Champions League and win trophies,” Buttner said on Dynamo’s official website. “Dynamo are building a very strong team and I am sure that we will be good enough to try and win the league title this season.

“This is my first time in Moscow and I will need time to adjust with my family. They flew out with me, so it would be easier to adapt.

“The training ground also has fantastic facilities. I am happy that I joined Dynamo.”
