FC Basel troll Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool after Champions League knockout stage qualification

Steven Gerrard of Liverpool is consoled by Basel manager Paulo Sousa at the end of the UEFA Champions League match between Liverpool FC and FC Basel

Swiss club FC Basel trolled English clubs Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham after their 1-1 draw at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League which knocked the Reds out of the competition and securing a place in the knockout round for themselves. Basel FC’s official Instagram account had a cartoon where a guy in a Liverpool shirt is being helped to his feet by two other guys in Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur shirts. To make matters even worse they played on Liverpool’s iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

The 17-time Swiss league champions had knocked out Chelsea of the Champions League and Tottenham out of the Europa League in 2013. The club stuck to putting the picture only on Instagram steering clearing off Twitter and Facebook where engagement and backlash is much more severe. Liverpool will now play in the knockout stage of the Europa League after they could only draw a must-win game in which winger Lazar Markovic was bizarrely sent off.
