David Luiz has apologised to the Brazil fans after their embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semi-finals.

Luiz, who stood in as captain for Thiago Silva who was suspended and Neymar who was injured, faced the cameras after the astonishing result against Germany.

Brazil had a nation behind them in their first semi-final since 2002, when they last won the World Cup, but were 5-0 down within half an hour as Germany raced ahead and didn’t stop. Luiz was at fault, just like the other defenders alongside him, as Brazil completely capitulated.

The Germans ran riot and their constant pressing led to mistakes in Brazil’s midfield and defence, to which they punished with clinicality and pace.

Thomas Muller opened the scoring with a clever finish from a corner and then Miroslav Klose added a second, becoming the World Cup’s all-time top scorer with his 16th goal in the tournament.

Following that were a handful of minutes that saw Toni Kroos grab himself two goals and Sami Khedira also picking one up.

Andre Schurrle then came on in the second half to score two more before Oscar grabbed a consolation goal at the end of the match.

A truly shocking night that Luiz has apologised for, while in tears, on television.

He said: ”Apologies to everybody, apologies to all the Brazilian people. I just wanted to see my people smile. We all know how important it was for me to see all of Brazil be happy, at least because of football.

“Germany were better than us. They prepared better. They played better. It’s a very sad day but it’s also a day from which to learn.”
