Footballers and their cars

John Terry

It’s a sport where those at the very top are paid huge sums of money, but what do footballers do with their spare cash? As the typical Premier League footballer earns around £30,000 per weekend bigger names earning more than twice that amount, it’s likely that they’ll have plenty to splash out on a big house, outdoor swimming pool and perhaps a pad near the training ground.

Something else top players are likely to do with their wages is buy at least one flash car. As we’re used to seeing in the tabloids, many of the game’s biggest names are likely to have a luxury saloon, speedy coupe or, if they’re feeling really flush, a supercar. Here are five top cars owned by current and former players that we’d all love:

Ferrari F430 Spider – John Terry

He’s got an enormous fleet of cars but Chelsea skipper John Terry will always find time to drive this surprisingly cheap £130,000 Spider. Many other players are likely to have one, but as he’s also got a Porsche 911 Turbo among his collection, he’ll always face a tricky dilemma over what to drive before going to the training ground.

Mercedes Benz SL63 – Ashley Cole

Like teammate Terry, Cole has good taste, going for this speedy yet classy convertible. Nothing quite says class like a Merc, though some might question whether the man behind the wheel has the same amount. It would be perfect for him to see out his career in France, especially if he grows frustrated with his lack of playing time for the Blues.

Bugatti Veyron – Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo is handsomely paid and, as you might expect, has splashed the cash when it comes to securing a top motor. The Portuguese forward, current winner of the Ballon d’Or, is one of very few people rich or lucky enough to own a Bugatti Veyron, putting him ahead of his peers when it comes to owning the best car.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 – Nani

Currently out of favour at Manchester United, the winger has something to console himself after another disappointing run-out under David Moyes’ regime. This Gallardo is slightly better than the one teammate Wayne Rooney owns and also cost £300,000. As only 250 were ever made, the Portuguese is part of a very exclusive club.

Mercedes McLaren SLR – El Hadji Diouf

Formerly of Liverpool and Blackburn, the Leeds United winger bought this car a few years back, clearly seduced by its unique doors, impressive top speed and looks. Among the likes of Luke Varney, Alex Pearce and Paul Green, his car will probably stand out when parked in Thorp Arch for training, much like the man himself!
