Greek Gods and their footballing counterparts

Kids don’t like candies as much as the Spain international likes to start a war

Fiction is perhaps the only world that makes sense. We can do anything we want in the world of fantasy; and not just the false promise of doing one’s own will. One such work of fiction is the Greek mythology.

It is a world with lots of stories about how the Gods created everything and the personality each deity had. Some Gods had characters so similar to some footballers that we might as well swap them.

And that’s exactly what we attempted to do here are as we list out the five footballers and their Greed God counterpart…

Diego Costa – Ares

Isn’t this apparent? Ask any football fan to describe Diego Costa in one word and they will instantly use the C-word as a label. If not that, then ‘thug’ would be the least—but the most respectful—degrading term they would tag him with.

He is a player who loves to pick a fight at any given moment. Kids don’t like candies as much as the Spain international likes to start a war. Be it kicking on opponents or spitting at them, Costa has been heavily criticized for his violent style of play.

Ares, in Greek myth, is the God of war. Hence, the comparison makes sense. Ares was also known for his war-brewing antics as he just loved the sight of blood and warcry as much as he loved the sound of metal gashing with other metal.

Gareth Bale – Hermes

Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale is one of the most feared players in the world, mainly because of his burst of pace

Hermes could go anywhere at any time, thanks to his unreal speed. Being the God of transition and boundaries, as well as working as the messenger of other Gods, he could move freely across the world of mortals and the divine.

Gareth Bale is one of the most feared players in the world, mainly because of his burst of pace. He absolutely destroyed Marc Bartra in the final of the Copa Del Rey in 2014 with his blistering speed. Indeed, if one asks Maicon as to what was the main reason for his downfall, he would point his fingers at the Welshman’s quickness.

Since both Bale and Hermes have a common power of speed in them, it is only fair to claim that the former Spurs winger is the equivalent of the character from which the likes of Flash and Quicksilver were inspired.

Luis Suarez – Hades

When one looks at the past of Luis Suarez, she/he would be blinded by the darkness. Keeping the three separate biting incidents aside, the Uruguayan has a history of brawls. He, like Diego Costa, likes to hustle around by shoving and pushing opponents in the process.

However, what sets him apart from the Brazilian-born Spaniard are the biting incidents. Those instances truly set him up as one of the dirtiest players in the world of football.

Hades, the brother of Zeus, was tricked into becoming the God of the doomed underworld. Ever since that, his antics were dark and problematic for many people. There is little doubt that the former Liverpool striker would have been the God of the underworld if he was a character in Greek mythology.

Zeus – Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano has had more girlfriends as a footballer than he has won titles with his teams

Many fans might find this absurd. After all, Zeus is the king of the Greek pantheon as he sits on the throne of heaven.

It might be Lionel Messi who sits on the throne of the best player in the world given that he is the current Ballon d’Or holder. However, if historical pattern were to repeat again, then it is only a matter of time before Cristiano Ronaldo wins the Ballon d’Or again—becoming the king of the holy football sanctuary.

There is also another reason for putting Cristiano in the same bracket as Zeus. In Greek myth, Zeus is believed to be a womanizer; something that the Portuguese is acquainted with. Cristiano has had more girlfriends as a footballer than he has won titles with his teams, making him a more logical choice for Zeus than Lionel Messi.

Poseidon – Lionel Messi

If Messi is not Zeus, then he is the God that is actually the most powerful in Greek mythology. Many believe that Zeus wields the most power in Greek myth, and they can’t be blamed for that. After all, the king of Gods must be the most powerful in order to be the king of Gods, right?

Wrong.

Zeus’ brother and the God of the seas, Poseidon is actually more powerful than his brother. While Zeus could throw a lightning bolt and mimic other people’s voices as well as shape-shift and turn humans into animals, elder brother Poseidon could cause earthquakes and storm as well as control the sea.

That’s not all. Poseidon, according to Greek myth, can control the atmosphere with psychic powers. He is also the God of wind, horses, seas, oceans, rivers, flood and drought. Cool, isn’t it?

Cristiano Ronaldo might go on to win his 4th Ballon d’Or title, but in terms of ability, the Argentine is a lot of ahead of his Portuguese rival, which makes him the Poseidon among footballers.
