Chile created history as they defeated Argentina in penalties to win their first ever Copa America title after almost a century of waiting. The victory was sweeter as they clinched the title on their home soil.

Alexis Sanchez struck the winning penalty for Chile after slotting home a sumptuous 'panenka' after Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega’s failed in their attempts for Argentina. Higuain had also missed a good goalscoring opportunity after 90 minutes in a game which had few chances.

Arsenal man Sanchez had also come close to scoring in extra time but the match went into penalty shootout. Chile managed to hold their nerve in the shootout as they scored all four attempts while Argentina buckled under pressure in the shootout.

Only Barcelona star Lionel Messi converted his chance as Le Albiceleste slumped to a defeat. And their wait for a major trophy since the 1993 Copa America triumph continues.
