Highlights: Chile beat Ecuador 2-0 in Copa America 2015 opener

Vidal Sanchez

The Copa America 2015 tournament kicked off in Chile as the home side took on Ecuador in the opener and posted a convincing 2-0 victory over the visitors. Chile have never won the competition in the 99 years that it has been played, however, they are among the favourites alongside the giants Argentina and Brazil to go all they way this time.

Chile started the match the brighter of the two sides, within the first couple of minutes, Alexis Sanchez found himself in front of goal with the ball at his feet but could only put the ball narrowly wide to the right.

The stop-start nature of the first half meant that neither side were able to create too many chances but in the 66th minute of the game Arturo Vidal found the breakthrough for Chile from the penalty spot, having earned the spot kick when he was fouled inside the box.

Enner Valencia came closest for Ecuador as he was unlucky to see his close-range header come off the crossbar in the 81st minute. It only took a couple minutes after that chance for the home side to seal their win as Alexis Sanchez played a reverse through ball to the onrushing Eduardo Vargas who slotted the ball past the keeper.

The only blip for the Chileans was the dismissal of Matias Fernandez in the 92nd minute as he received his second yellow of the game.

The win means the hosts sit on top of Group A with three points while the other match from the group will be played at 5am IST on June 13 between Bolivia and Mexico.
