I-League clubs to benefit from ISL

The Indian Super League (ISL) is set to provide financial support to I-League clubs, according to a Business Standard report. The clubs would get a ‘substantial’ part of revenue offered for their players who would be playing in the ISL.

Each player would get a premium over his actual club salary during the duration of the ISL tournament (two to three months) from the franchises.

“Now a part of this premium would be shared between the clubs and the player. This would be done via a mutual agreement between the players and the club,” an East Bengal official stated.

Kolkata clubs were hit hard by the chit-fund scam last year as their season budget had to be reduced with Mohun Bagan also failing to pay their players on time while United Sports Club are still without a sponsor.

“This would provide some relief to the clubs’ finances but what would be crucial of the league’s success is what range of global players would actually come and play during the ISL,” a Mohun Bagan official was quoted saying.

IMG-Reliance have already announced the eight city franchises with a host of celebrities, cricketing legends, couple of I-League clubs among the owners while Star India will be the broadcasters.
