I-League: East Bengal complete the signing of New Zealand World Cupper Leo Bertos

Kolkata giants East Bengal have confirmed the signing of New Zealand World Cupper Leo Bertos as their marquee foreigner for the 2014-15 campaign.

Sportskeeda reported earlier that East Bengal held advanced talks with Bertos before agreeing personal terms. The 32-year-old becomes the second foreign signing for the red-and-gold brigade this summer following the addition of Nigerian Ranti Martins.

Bertos has signed a two-year deal with the club and his contract will start from August 1.

The former Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory player played every minute of New Zealand’s 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, where the Kiwis were eliminated from the group stage despite being unbeaten.

Bertos has been capped 56 times at senior international level and will become the fourth World Cupper to play for East Bengal after Iran’s Majid Bishkar, Nigeria’s Emeka Ezeugo and South African Macdonald Mukansi.

It remains to be seen where Armando Colaco uses Bertos as he is capable of playing as a right midfielder, wingback or attacking midfielder.
