Kolkata giants East Bengal are set to announce New Zealand World Cupper Leo Bertos as their marquee foreigner for the 2014-15 season, Sportskeeda can reveal.

Sportskeeda had earlier reported that East Bengal are in advanced talks with the 32-year-old and on Saturday a source close to the club confirmed that the Kiwi has agreed personal terms.

The contract is set to start from August 1st and East Bengal are expected to make the signing official soon.

Bertos played in every minute of New Zealand’s 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign and will become the fourth World Cupper to play for East Bengal after Iran’s Majid Bishkar, Nigeria’s Emeka Ezeugo and South African Macdonald Mukansi.

Honduras World Cupper Edder Delgado and former Liverpool strikers Nathan Eccleston and Michael Ngoo were also on East Bengal’s marquee foreigner shortlist but they were only backup options with Bertos being first-choice.

Bertos has represented New Zealand 56 times at senior international level and last played for Wellington Phoenix in the A-League. The former Perth Glory player is highly versatile as he can operate as a right winger, wingback or central midfielder.
