Interview with NorthEast United's Kondwani Mtonga: 'Happy with my performance in the ISL so far'

NorthEast United’s Kondwani Mtonga has hit the ground running in the inaugural edition of the Indian Super League. The experienced Zambian international came to Indian shores and signed with I-League club Shillong Lajong FC on loan and is now plying his trade with ISL franchise NorthEast United FC.

Mtonga has scored one goal against Mumbai City FC and is looking forward to doing his best for NorthEast United. In an exclusive interview to Sportskeeda , Mtonga spoke about the ISL and Indian football in general.

You have joined I-League side Shillong Lajong FC and you are also a part of ISL side NorthEast United FC. What is your first impression about playing in India?

I think it is a very good league. The competition in the Indian Super League is very high. I am happy with things here in India.

What are your thoughts on the Indian Super League and Indian football in general?

The way Indian Super League is going is pretty good. The Indian players are performing well and I hope the standards of Indian football will improve soon. I am sure Indian football will grow.

Your role in the team has been pivotal, and you have also scored a goal. Are you happy with your performances so far?

Yes, I am happy with my performance so far. I am happy to contribute to my team’s success. I hope to improve more in the coming matches.

Please tell us about your experience of playing alongside World Cup winner Joan Capdevila.

I go to know a lot of things from Joan. The kind of encouragement he gives us is really good. We get to learn a lot of things from him.

What have your problems been going forward. Do you think NorthEast United are overdependent on one or two players?

I cannot say much on that. All I can say is the team is working really hard and trying to improve.

Tell us about your experience of playing under Ricki Herbert – a coach who has managed New Zealand and took them to the 2010 World Cup.

Ricki is a fantastic coach. He is a great tactician and I have got to learn a lot of things from him.

What are your team’s chances of winning the tournament?

It is very competitive league. Every team is trying their best and fighting hard. It is a tough job and we are working hard as a team to perform well.
