It wasn't our best performance, says Robin van Persie after 1-2 win against Southampton

Robin van Persie celebrates after scoring the winning goal against Southampton.

Manchester United registered a 2-1 win over Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Monday as it proved to be United’s second away win of the season and their fifth one in as many matches. The win has also helped them move to the third position on the table with 28 points from their 15 matches.

One of the key architects behind the win was their striker Robin van Persie. The Dutchman had scored both the goals for his side, taking his tally to 6 in the 14 games that he played so far this season. For the Saints, it was their third loss in a row and were pushed to the fifth position in the standings. They next play the struggling Burnley on Saturday.

However, after the win, van Persie wasn’t very pleased with his team’s performance but said that they were gradually improving and were heading in the right direction.

“I don't think we played our best football today,” said Persie after the match, as quoted by Goal. “At times, we were a bit sloppy here and there but we fought hard and we gave absolutely everything. In the end we nicked it.”

“It was a tough game, they have a good team. We knew what to expect but in the end it's a fifth straight victory so we're on the up,” he added.

Talking about his own performance, the former Arsenal man said that fitness wise he is getting better with every passing game and felt that goals will come as keeps playing more games.

"I've been feeling quite good over the last couple of weeks fitness-wise. Every time it gets easier to play 90 minutes and tonight as well, I kept it up until the last minutes and that's what you want.”

“Then the goals and assists and in the end the wins will come. So I just have to keep it going and play more,” he added.

Following the victory, Manchester United now stand third on the league table and face Liverpool at home on Sunday.
