Jamie Carragher has no place for Steven Gerrard in his all time Liverpool-Manchester United combined XI

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have been two of Liverpool’s standout performers in the last 20 years

Jamie Carragher picked his all-time combined Liverpool and Manchester United XI and his team has some surprising high-profile exclusions. Writing in his Daily Mail column, Carragher said that he could not find place anywhere in the team for friend and former team-mate Steven Gerrard.

Unsurprisingly, Carragher who spent 17 long and fruitful years as a first-team player at Anfield, picked six players from Liverpool and five from bitter rivals Manchester United.

Carragher chose Peter Schmeichel as his number 1, while Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson pair in the centre of defense. Speaking over his selections for the team, Jamie Carragher said:

I was agonising over my second centre half alongside Alan Hansen.

It came down to Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Emlyn Hughes or Mark Lawrenson… seeing as I couldn’t pick myself!

Rio’s too similar to Hansen and despite Vidic always being a very tough opponent of mine, I went for Lawro, which made it six Liverpool players to United’s five!

Liverpool have never really had a great left back so I went for Denis Irwin, and I couldn’t pick Gary Neville at right back!

Bobby Charlton is the greatest English player of all time and takes the attacking midfield role, with Graeme Souness the more defensive one because of his passing as well as his aggression.

And that means two of my favourite players — Roy Keane and even my old mate Steven Gerrard — miss out.

Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best are on the wings while Anfield duo Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush are united up front in this formidable looking team.

The team misses out on some of the modern day Liverpool and Manchester United greats such as Gerrard, Keane, Scholes, Giggs and even Rooney.

However, there is no denying the fact that this team that picking an all-time Liverpool- Manchester United XI is almost an impossible task considering the number of brilliant players who have turned up for these two sides.
