Moreno had a disastrous Europa League final

Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher was left fuming after seeing his side lose their lead and eventually succumb to a 3-1 loss against Sevilla in the Europa League Final in Basel, Switzerland. The Reds defender was particularly angry on Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno whose mistakes and poor display led to Sevilla equalizing and finally winning the trophy.

Daniel Sturridge gave the Scousers the lead with an exceptional trivial goal but Kevin Gameiro equalised for the Andalusian side before Coke scored a brace to give the La Liga side their third successive Europa League title.

Soon after tweeting about Moreno, Carragher realized he had overstepped the line and deleted it. Many of the other ex-Liverpool players and fans slammed the Spanish left back as well after his horror second half on Wednesday.

Reds defender Mark Lawrenson when asked about Moreno had this to say.

"I've lost count of how many mistakes this guy has made. It's all very good pouring forward but the clue is in the title - left-back. Try defending occasionally. Moreno has made mistakes all season - basic errors.”

"Where was he for Villarreal's goal the other week? He was trying to score a goal at the other end,” he said.

The irony is Alberto Moreno used to ply his trade for Sevilla prior to his move to Merseyside. The 23-year-old turned out for the Seville side 62 times in three seasons before his move to Merseyside. Many Reds fans have even gone as far as to say Moreno returned to play for his old club for just one night.

The full back has represented Liverpool 91 times since his move from Sevilla in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of 12 million pounds.

Speaking about the defeat, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said in his post match press conference that he blames himself for the loss in the final as he should have got the team to react better after they conceded just 17 seconds into the second half.

"We had a wonderful atmosphere until it went to 1-1, but then Sevilla took the game and we did not defend well.”

“We all have to learn to react better in situations like this. This game, especially in my situation as the manager of the team, all you have to do is self-criticism. Nothing else. It’s all about us, it’s all about me. It’s my job to help the players react better in different situations, so I can improve a lot,” the German said.
