EPL 2016/17: Jamie Redknapp criticises Marcus Rashford for letting the team down

Rashford did not do enough to stop Chamberlain from the crossing the ball for the equaliser

Football pundit Jamie Redknapp believes that the reason behind Manchester United conceding the late equaliser at Old Trafford against Arsenal is Marcus Rashford. The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder believes that Rashford could have done better to prevent the goal.

Jose Mourinho’s men were leading the game 1-0 courtesy of Juan Mata’s brilliant strike but the Red Devils lost their nerve in the dying minutes of the game when Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud was given a chance to equalise in the 89th minute. Marcus Rashford was caught in the wind as Giroud made the most of an excellent cross by Chamberlain.

Jamie Redknapp did not shy away from singling out the Manchester United youngster in his post-match analysis blaming the 19-year-old for costing Manchester United the 3 points.

“I'm a big fan of Marcus Rashford but I don’t think he does well enough at all. Whether you're a centre-forward or not, you've got to do better,” said Jamie Redknapp.

Redknapp was critical of Rashford’s lack mindedness to close down Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from advancing forward and delivering the cross to Giroud.

”He doesn’t get out to Chamberlain quick enough, he lets him run at him and pick up pace. He gets beaten miles too easily,” Redknapp said.

Jamie Redknapp also stated that he would be surprised if the 19-year-old did not get an earful from his Manchester United manager after the game.

“You're hanging on for dear life to win such an important game. He didn’t do enough, he really didn’t, and I'll be amazed if Mourinho isn’t telling him that in the dressing room.

“No matter what position you play, when you’re hanging on for a win you’ve got to do a job and he didn’t do it, he let his team down there,” he added.

It was a different story last season in the same fixture when Marcus Rashford made his Premier League debut against Arsenal under Louis Van Gaal at Old Trafford. The England international hit the ground running as he scored two goals and set one to help United win the game.

But despite the 19-year-old’s mistake on Saturday, former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs had something positive to say about the young starlet insisting that the balance changes when a player like Zlatan Ibrahimovic is missing from the team.

“The balance shifts when Ibrahimovic comes back in. You don't have to worry about Rashford running the channels because Ibrahimovic won't do that, said Giggs.

“United teams have always had pace and power, so when you take Rashford out the team you lack a little bit, but then Ibrahimovic brings in different qualities,” he added.

The 1-1 draw against Arsenal sees Manchester United remain six points off the Gunners in 6th place on the Premier League table.
