President of the Japan Football Association Kuniya Daini is believes Japn is ready to overtake Qatar as the official FIFA World Cup hosts for 2022.

Japan Football Association (JFA) president Kuniya Daini has come forward and claimed that Japan is ready to take over Qatar as the 2022 FIFA World Cup host if FIFA decides to strip Qatar off their hosting rights due to the various corruption allegations surrounding them.

“If FIFA look for an alternative country, we already have the stadiums that would meet the criteria to host it,” he told AFP. “We have the Olympics in 2020. If there is a chance, we’d like to do it, although I don’t know how likely that would be.”

Qatar recently came under the microscope of FIFA’s ethics committee, headed by former US district attorney Michael Garcia after being accused of poor treatment of its foreign construction workers, with figures revealing the death of almost 1000 Indian migrant workers who have been working in Qatar for infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup, confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Doha.

Japan was one of the few countries who were in contention for the hosting rights, and have already co-hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup with neighbours South Korea once.

“We are looking to perform better than we did the last time,” Daini added. “In South Africa we got to the last 16 so that means this time we want to reach the quarter-finals. That would be a successful result, but first we have to advance from the group stage. It’s a difficult group, so that’s the first aim.”
