Rumour: John Terry must halve his wages to stay at Chelsea

John Terry

John Terry – Will he agree to the new terms of the contract?

According to a newspaper report this morning, John Terry will be offered a new contract to stay at Chelsea but, in order to do so, will have to halve his current (reported) £150,000 a week wages.

What can you say about Captain Fantastic? Time and time again he has proved the doubters wrong and even more so this season. After Rafa Benitez tried his hardest to force him out, he was given the same chance as everyone else to prove themselves when Jose Mourinho returned to the club and has never looked back.

His centre back partnership with Gary Cahill is the best in the Premier League so far this term and as we know, there has even been calls for him to come out of international retirement and line up alongside Cahill for England.

The problem we have here is Chelsea’s stance with players over the age of 30 and their contracts. We know that the club only likes to offer a one year extension at a time and it’s seems to be the case again with Terry.

As for the reported pay cut? Well first of all the figures we read about are not concrete, there are rumour and speculation and secondly, I do not think that money matters to John Terry or players these days who have been in the game for as long as he has and at the top of his game for as long as he has.

The deciding factor will be if Jose Mourinho believes that he can still perform at the top levels again next season and if John Terry wants to stay. I think we all know the answer to both of those questions.

John Terry has a huge part to play in the next six Chelsea games (possibly seven with the Champions League Final if we get through) and at this moment in time, despite the real emergence of Gary Cahill who is nearly right up there with him, there is nobody better!
