Chelsea have been accused of buying their titles since the Roman Abramovich takeover of the London club in 2003. The money flowed like water and players were brought in, along with ‘The Special One’ in 2004. The spending and the quality it brought with it, provided immediate results under the Portuguese manager.

In his second spell back at Chelsea he has been relatively frugal, though he brought in the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa, the club has offset the costs of bringing in these quality players by making some high quality sales as well.

This transfer window has seen a subdued Chelsea whose most expensive signing so far in the summer has been the £8 million acquisition of Asmir Begovic from Stoke City. On the other hand, title rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United have strengthened, spending early in the window.

Jose Mourinho who is on pre-season in the United States spoke about the activity from the rival clubs.

“In the beginning of Mr. Abramovich coming to Chelsea, Chelsea was buying the title,” he said, according to Sky Sports.

“Now, they are buying the title. All of them, they are buying the title.

“It is up to us to be strong and to fight them and, obviously, to try and win it again, even without the big investments.”

Mourinho defends Diego Costa

Diego Costa made it clear a few days ago that he wasn’t considering changing his style because it’s the way he plays and that adds to his play as a striker. Well, his actions spoke louder than his words when Chelsea took on Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-season friendly.

Costa got into an altercation with Serge Aurier within the first minute of the game and the feud continued till Aurier was substituted off in the second half. At one point, the Spanish striker seemed to shove the PSG defender in the face and in turn was brought down by Aurier.

When asked about the incident, Jose Mourinho defended his striker, speaking about Aurier’s aggression and expressing his satisfaction with Costa’s behaviour. He told the club’s official website: “Aurier is not a player who normally plays in the PSG team. Normally they play with Thiago Silva and David Luiz and Marquinhos.

“So he had a chance, he faced the game like a big game and it was important for him, and he was I too aggressive.

“For me no problem, I understand football, and Diego behaved tremendously well.”
