Losing at home is something that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is not very used to, and the 51-year-old manager was left frustrated following Chelsea’s 1-2 defeat to Sunderland on Saturday at Stamford Bridge. It was the first time that Chelsea had suffered a league-game loss at home under the Portuguese, thus breaking his 77 home game unbeaten streak.

Let us take a look at Jose Mourinho’s home record with the three big teams he has managed: Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Chelsea:

Jose Mourinho moved to Chelsea in June 2004, and made his presence felt in the very first season itself by winning Chelsea’s first top-flight domestic title in 50 years. They went on to win their Premier League title again under Mourinho the following season, with only five away losses to their name. However, Chelsea failed to emulate their performance in the next two seasons as they finished their season second twice, with Manchester United winning the title on both occasions.

In the 2007/08 season, Mourinho’s Chelsea set a new record of 64 consecutive home league matches without defeat after their 3-2 victory against Birmingham City, a record that was set by Liverpool between 1978 and 1981.

Inter Milan:

Jose Mourinho was appointed as Inter Milan’s manager after the sacking of Roberto Mancini on June, 2008, a decision that Inter boss Massimo Moratti has always been proud of. In his very first season at Inter, he had won the Italian SuperCup and won the Scudetto by a ten-point margin. Inter’s performance in the Champions League was, however, criticised after they were were eliminated in the first knockout round following their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

In his second season, Inter had perhaps their greatest campaign in their history as they secured a treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League, the first Italian club to ever do so.

Real Madrid:

Mourinho’s first season at Real Madrid was not quite the way the Portuguese would have probably anticipated, and lost twice at the Santiago Bernabeu at the hands of Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza. The following season, however, was a whole different story as Real Madrid inched the Spanish league title after four years since they had won it for the last time. Their 1-3 loss against Barcelona at home was the only home defeat that season for Mourinho’s Madrid.

In the 2012/13 season, even though Real Madrid were undefeated at home in La Liga, they ended the season trophyless, and Mourinho closed the Madrid-chapter of his book following rifts with players and fans.

Chelsea:

Mourinho made his much-anticipated comeback to England at the beginning of this season, and was announced as Chelsea’s manager for the second time, on a four-year contract. On 19 April 2014, Mourinho suffered his first ever home league defeat as Chelsea manager in a 2–1 loss to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge, his first league home defeat as manager since Barcelona’s 3-1 win at Real Madrid in December 2011.
