Could the Old Trafford crowd see Toure in a red shirt next season?

In a shock move, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may swoop in to sign Manchester City outcast Yaya Toure. As per reports from Italian news site Calciomercato, Manchester United and Premier League rivals, Arsenal, are interested in signing the former Barcelona midfielder.

Toure hasn’t started a single game in the Guardiola-era and looks certain to leave in January or in the summer when his contract expires at City. The Ivory Coast international was also left out of Manchester City’s Champions League squad, which made it certain that he had no future at Manchester City.

United have plenty of options in central midfield with the likes of Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, and Morgan Schneiderlin vying for the two central midfield berths, with Herrera and Pogba the first-choice midfield pairing.

If reports of the Portuguese manager’s interest in the Ivorian are true, it would be a surprising and baffling move as the Manchester club have plenty of midfielders and will be signing a player who is well past his best.

A move crosstown to United will see him join the likes of Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Andy Cole, Peter Schmeichel, Denis Law and Andrei Kanchelskis and play for both Manchester clubs.

Inter, Juve interested in Toure

Italian clubs Inter Milan and Juventus are also reportedly interested in signing the 33-year-old, while a move to a Chinese club is also likely for the midfielder. Toure’s agent has previously said that his client will stay and see his contract out and will make his move out of City next summer.

The Ivorian has been out-of-favour at Manchester City since the arrival of Pep Guardiola this season. Toure, who has been an integral part of City’s recent success, was not in City’s first-team plans at the start of the season but has absolutely no future at the Manchester club after the public feud between his agent, Dimitri Seluk, and manager, Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester City manager said in no uncertain terms that Toure can get back to the squad only after Seluk apologises to Toure’s teammates and him. Toure’s agent didn’t back down, criticising Guardiola and his achievements.

Guardiola had a falling-out with Toure previously when they were both at Barcelona, which resulted in the Ivory Coast international making his move to Manchester City in 2010 for £24 million.
