Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho reportedly believes that his team would need a few more transfer windows to sort out a broken squad at Old Trafford. The ‘Special One’ was brought in as Louis Van Gaal’s replacement in the summer with hopes of turning the club’s fortunes, however, United have struggled under Mourinho and are currently 6th in the league table.

As per reports from Daily Mirror, sources working close with Mourinho have revealed that the manager is looking to instill belief and new mentality into the United squad and is targeting players with strong characteristics.

One of the sources spoke with Daily Mirror and revealed Mourinho’s opinion of the squad: “We need quality players, but you can not do it in one to two transfer windows.

“You cannot buy four or five players in one go of the level that we need.”

Mourinho has not helped his case either

Jose Mourinho is known to get into rifts with his players, and had most recently fallen out with Diego Costa and Eden Hazard at Chelsea last season and Mourinho has shown glimpses of his feisty nature at United.

The Portuguese manager publicly slated Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling for their poor fitness condition and their decision to withdraw their names ahead of the game against Swansea couple of weeks ago. Mourinho was made to look silly as only days later reports emerged of Smalling breaking his toe and Shaw still struggling with the broken foot he suffered last season.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is another player who has seen very little game time since his move to Old Trafford. If Mourinho continues to stifle his players for minutes on the pitch, United will indeed require a couple of more transfer windows to sort out their squad strength and once again be able to fight for the league title.

Where do United need to spend?

The recent run of results have frustrated the fans and manager alike, especially after spending over £150 million on signing new players last summer. United managed to sign the likes of Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly for big bucks but Mourinho believes signing new players will be a trend at United in coming seasons.

With their current struggle for goals, a quality centre-forward will be Mourinho’s key area of focus with Antoine Griezmann and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang linked with a move to Old Trafford. Central defence is another area United need to spend heavily with Virgil Van Dijk and Jese Gimenez being rumoured with a summer move.
