Jurgen Klopp refuses to get carried away with Liverpool's hammering of Man City

Jurgen Klopp celebrating after Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Man City

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, although ecstatic after his team's remarkable performance at the Etihad Stadium, refused to get carried away with talks of Liverpool finishing in the top four and believed that there was work to be done if his team was to reach the Champions League.

According to a report on Liverpool Echo, Klopp felt that one good result does change the club's targets. Few weeks ago, Liverpool had lost to Crystal Palace in Klopp's first loss as Liverpool manager.

“It's only okay that you ask this (about top four) if you ask it as well after Crystal Palace. We can’t change our targets every two weeks just because we have won. We don’t have to think about this. Our situation is difficult enough. But we played very well tonight,” Klopp said following the 4-1 victory against Manchester City.

“We have to work, that’s all. If somebody thinks after a game like this we can go to the top of the table, it's really not my problem. I don’t think that way,” he continued.

Acknowledging that the Champions League is where ‘the big money’ is, Klopp was not ready to make any promises regarding reaching the top four and just wanted to stay focused on the immediate targets.

“It's only hard work. (that will get us there) We changed the manager. There were reasons, it wasn’t because of the weather or something like this, it (before) wasn't what the owners or the supporters wanted,” Klopp explained.

“And it wasn’t a problem with Brendan Rodgers because he is a brilliant manager. But we had to change some things. Now we are in a better way than two weeks ago and we have to go ahead. That's all. If you want you can write it in your job, it's cool, but I don't want to talk about it,” he said.

Since Klopp became the Liverpool manager, Liverpool have lost only one game, which was in the Premier League against Crystal Palace. In the five Premier Leagues games managed by Klopp, Liverpool have managed to get eight points with their two victories coming against Chelsea and Man City.

Man City's strong home record along with Sergio Aguero's return might have been factors that brought fear to opponents. But, Klopp's men did not seem fazed as they handed City a huge defeat. It was only the second time that Man City conceded four goals in a competitive game at the Etihad.

“We had bigger chances (in other games) since I was here but we did not take them. Today we made the first three, I think, had more then, and didn't take all of them. But you saw at 3-1 the game could have changed,” Klopp said.

“They changed the system at half-time, went 4-4-2 second half, put Sterling in the middle together with Aguero. It was difficult but possible. It was all we needed from tonight and the lads did well,” he added.
