Striker Karim Benzema will most likely not be available for selection to Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti going into their Champions League second leg tie against city rivals Atletico Madrid. Having been taken off in the 76th minute of the previous tie, the French hitman will be sidelined by a sprain to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury similar to that of his Croatian teammate Luka Modric.

On their official website, Real Madrid said they would monitor the situation. Benzema has missed the previous two training sessions with the rest of the group indicating that he will take no part in the all-Spanish quarter-final tie.

The extent of the injury, however, is unclear. Any estimation of how long he is expected to remain on the treatment table is unavailable.

Ancelotti will be in a spot of bother as he will crucially also miss the aforementioned Luka Modric and the Welshman Gareth Bale through injuries as well.
