One thing that we don’t need to deliberate too much about Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu is that it was an utterly humiliating affair for Los Blancos who started off poorly and hardly put up a fight against an inspired team put out by Luis Enrique.
There were a number of impressive statistics recorded in the game, we have put together a whole list of them, some from our own endeavour and others with the help of Opta, Infostrada and Mister Chip.
Let’s start with a more obvious one, Real conceded 7 shots on goal against Barcelona, a number that hadn’t been reached by any team at the Bernabeu since June 2013 against Osasuna when the visitors on that occasion scored 13 shots. On this occasion, 4 of those 7 shots made it into the back of the net, that’s some clinical finishing from the Barca forwards who were in full flow on the night and could have perhaps had more.
The scoreline also equalled Rafael Benitez’s worst loss margin as manager in his entire coaching career as he joined an unwanted club as the 5th consecutive Real Madrid manager to have lost his first Clasico along with Juande Ramos, Pellegrini, Mourinho, and Ancelotti.
Another obvious one, Isco saw red in the dying minutes of the game for bringing down Neymar with a rash tackle, no guesses on who was the last one to have been sent off in a Clasico. You probably guessed this already – Sergio Ramos was that man who saw red in March 2014 when the two sides met. However, Isco did put himself in the history books with that sending off as he became only the third substitute in the 113 year Clasico history to be sent off, the first was Moran in 1982 and it was followed by Marcelo in 2011.
Luis Suarez scored two goals in the game and in the process became the 8th Barcelona player to score a brace at the Bernabeu after Asensi, Amarilla, Salinas, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi, and Henry. But his second goal has another impressive stat associated with it, as the build up to the goal consisted of 24 passes. That’s the highest for a goal in the La Liga in this season so far.
Another scorer on the day was Andres Iniesta, his goal broke quite a few runs as his goal marked the first time in the last 20 goals for Barcelona that anyone other than Neymar or Suarez has scored. It’s worth noting that the other 2 also scored on the day, however, this is the first time that Iniesta has scored and assisted in a Clasico for Barcelona. It’s quite amazing that he hadn’t done it before, it also marked his first assist at the Bernabeu.
Some runs have continued though, in scoring 4 goals, Barcelona have ensured that they have netted a goal in at least the last 20 games against Real Madrid on the trot. It is their longest scoring run in Clasico history. It also ended Real’s run of scoring in 18 consecutive Clasicos, the last time they were shut out was also at the Bernabeu in the Champions League (April 2011).
Considering that this is the first time in 18 matches that no one has scored between Barcelona and Real Madrid, Bravo became the first goalkeeper in 18 games to have kept a clean sheet in the Clasico.
A surprising one for Barcelona has been their leader in the assists tally, Sergi Roberto who made his 4th La Liga assist against Real tops the charts there. It could be the start of a great Clasico run for the youngster, much like the one Luis Suarez has been having, he has either scored or assisted in all three Clasicos he’s played so far.
The Uruguayan is also part of another run for the Catalan club as he and the Brazilian Neymar have both scored in 4 consecutive games for Barca in all competitions. Suarez’s second goal was also monumental as it meant that Barcelona went up 4-0 at the Bernabeu for the first time since 1986.
Barcelona fans were ecstatic to see their talisman Lionel Messi return to the pitch, and simply by doing so, he added a couple more badges to his already glittering career. He has now won 15 Clasicos, only 3 players have managed more wins – Francisco Gento (21), Alfredo Di Stefano (17) and Xavi (17) but he could easily get to the top of that list considering he’s the only one on the top of that list still playing.
Another list that Gento (35 apps) leads and Messi (28 apps) is fourth on is the players who have appeared in the most consecutive Clasicos. Between him and the Real Madrid legend are Iker Casillas (30 apps) and Raul Gonzalez (29 apps), but again, Messi could get to the top.
