PSG star Serge Aurier has been sentenced to two months in prison following an altercation with a police officer when he was leaving a Parisian nightclub on 30 May earlier this year. The controversial defender was arrested in the early hours that day near the Champs-Elysees for his violent confrontation with the police officer.

PSG officials had said that the club will wait until receiving further information before making any comment on an incident “which did not take place during a competition period.” However, charges were pressed against him and Aurier has been handed a two-month prison sentence by a French court.

The Ivory Coast international has additionally been fined €600 (£520) by the Paris correctional tribunal, with a further €1,500 in costs.

Aurier, who had spent a night out with friends on May 30 was stopped by a police officer on his way out from a night club. Things got violent when the officer reportedly asked Aurier to take a breath test which ended in the right-back allegedly elbowing the officer.

However, it is reported that the sentence is “convertible” and Aurier will not have to serve time in jail. It is likely that he will be handed community service instead. Aurier has announced that he will appeal the sentence.

The news of the sentence comes on the back of Aurier being sent off in PSG’s 2-0 Ligue 1 defeat over Toulouse on Friday. However, the defender is still available to play away at Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Not the first brush with controversy for Aurier

This is not the first time Serge Aurier has garnered unwanted controversy. Earlier in February, Aurier was suspended for six weeks by PSG following an appearance of a video on social media making derogatory and homophobic comments about the then PSG coach Laurent Blanc, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and other players.

Aurier had then said his act was inexcusable and the suspension by the club was justified. Aurier,at that time, had told RMC Sport: “It is a big disappointment and a gross error of judgement on my part to have put the club into this situation on the eve of such an important game.”

“I have to apologise to the coach. I have to say it to him especially after all that he has done for me since I arrived here at PSG.”

Serge Aurier is considered on of the best right backs in Europe and has already assisted Edinson Cavani once this season in a Champions League match against Arsenal.
