Lionel Messi is now Barcelona’s all time record goal scorer

Barcelona beat Osasuna last night in resounding fashion as they won 7-0 with Lionel Messi leading the way with a hat-trick.

But that itself wasn’t the talking point from the game. In the process, 26-year-old Messi broke the record for the most goals scored by a player in a Barcelona shirt.

The previous record was held by Paulino Alcantara who scored 369 goals in just 357 matches. He played for Barcelona from 1912 to 1927.

And the record that stood for 87 years has finally been broken, although Messi took 95 more games to pass the mark.

The other big records Messi will now be targeting are:-

  • All-time scorer in La Liga (251 by Telmo Zarra. Messi has 232)
  • All-time foreign goal scorers in La Liga (Hugo Sanchez has 234)
  • All-time El Clasico goal scoring record (Alfredo Di Stefano has 19. Messi has 18)
  • Champions League goal scoring record (Raul has 71. Messi has 67)
