Liverpool 1-1 Everton - Player Ratings

Stoke City v Manchester United - Premier League
Rooney converted a controversial penalty to hand Everton an unlikely point against Everton's fiercest rivals.

Liverpool hosted Everton in one of the biggest games of the weekend hoping to extend their recent run of good results. For Everton and Sam Allardyce, it was all about eking out an away result.

However, it looked as if Liverpool would run away with the game after Mohamed Salah yet again put them in the driver’s seat in the 42nd minute with a sublime effort.

The Reds continued to mount pressure on the Everton goal but failed to breach the Toffees' defence and were duly punished when Dejan Lovren was adjudged to have fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin and boyhood Evertonian Wayne Rooney converted a penalty in the 77th minute.

Everton

Jordan Pickford - 6

Though Liverpool dominated the game, Pickford was only required to make a couple of saves. However, there was very little that he could have done to prevent the Liverpool goal from going in. Overall, Pickford was calm and collected and did not make any mistakes to keep his side in the game.

Cuco Martina – 4

To say that the former Southampton man had a tough game would be an understatement. Martina failed to contain the likes of Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and it came as no surprise to us that a lot of Liverpool’s attacking moves originated from the right flank.

Ashley Williams – 5

The Welsh international, like Martina, had a poor game as he failed to lead his defensive troops and was guilty of offering the Liverpool attackers time and space on the ball. He looked hurried, struggled against the pace of Liverpool’s attack and largely had his partner Kenny to thank for containing the damage.

Jonjoe Kenny - 8

Southampton v Everton - Premier League
Kenny was amongst the few Everton players who impressed on the evening.

Jonjoe Kenny was by far the best Everton player on the pitch. The 20-year-old made several crucial blocks through the game and was also available to thwart Liverpool’s attempts on the Everton goal and it was a calm performance from the centre-back that defied his age.

Mason Holgate – 6

Another one of Everton’s young brigade, Holgate had a mixed game. While he was calm and composed on the ball, he offered very little resistance to the Liverpool attack on the right flank as they found time and space on the ball on several occasions. Perhaps his biggest moment in the game came late in the first half when he kept his head on his shoulders to not commit to a challenge on Sadio Mane.

Idrissa Gueye - 7

Gueye was perhaps the only Everton midfielder to put up a fight in the Merseyside derby. He put in an athletic shift that saw him win 4 tackles and 3 interceptions while also being tidy with his passing. While he earned himself a yellow card, he would not be too bothered as his side eked out an important point away from home.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 5

Southampton v Everton - Premier League
The Iceland international failed to impress yet again.

The Iceman found it tough to leave his mark on the game as he was largely restricted to his own half. Sigurdsson completed just 7 passes through the game, failed to create any goal scoring opportunity and was largely restricted to being a spectator for a large duration of the game.

Tom Davies – 5

It was a very poor performance from Davies as he was constantly bullied around by the Reds and failed to link up well with his colleagues. His inability to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm cost his side the bragging rights in the middle of the park and it was a tough learning experience for the 19-year-old who was withdrawn at the stroke of the halftime.

Wayne Rooney – 6

Rooney was largely restricted to being a spectator due to Liverpool dominating the proceedings. However, he needs to applauded for keeping his calm to convert the penalty that came his way to register his first goal in a Merseyside derby in 5th attempt.

Oumar Niasse – 4

Niasse began the night as one of Everton’s two-man attack. However, he spent a considerable time on the left-flank and failed to put any kind of pressure on the fragile Liverpool defence and was deservedly replaced by Aaron Lennon at the break.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 6

Liverpool v Everton - Premier League
Calvert-Lewin was the unlikely hero who played a crucial role in Everton eking out a positive result.

Calvert-Lewin will be given a hero’s welcome at the Goodison Park tomorrow for it was the 20-year-old who earned Everton a penalty late in the second half to help them gain an unlikely point from the home of their fiercest rivals.

Substitutes

Aaron Lennon – 5

The England international failed to add to his side’s attacking prowess after coming on at half-time and it seems unlikely that Everton will offer the 30-year-old a new contract in the upcoming summer.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 6

Schneiderlin was brought on in a bid to add some mettle to the Everton attack and while he made his decisions wisely, he failed to add to his side’s attack.

Phil Jagielka – NA

Jagielka came on in the 82nd minute in a bid to secure Everton’s position in the game.

Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool - Premier League
Gomez's stock continues to grow with each match day

Simon Mignolet - 6

The Belgian had very little to do throughout the game as Everton failed to conjure up a goal scoring opportunity until the 77th minute when Everton were awarded a penalty. There was very little that Mignolet could have done to prevent Rooney from scoring.

Joe Gomez – 8

The more we see of Joe Gomez, the more we believe that he is the future of Liverpool’s defence. Gomez was calm and composed on the ball and did very well to disrupt the opposition’s rhythm with a mix of power and pace. While Salah might get all the plaudits for the goal, Gomez was Liverpool’s best player of the evening.

Dejan Lovren – 5

It was all going well for the Croatian until the 77th minute when he lay his hands upon Calvert-Lewin and the England U-21 international did not need an invitation to go down inside the box. While some might term say that it was a soft penalty to award, Lovren was still at fault and has cost the Reds another couple of points.

Ragnar Klavan – 6

The Estonian looked surprisingly assured against Everton as he dealt with the threat of the Toffees’ attack well. It is perhaps also an indication of the nature of this Everton team that is slow on and off the ball.

Andrew Robertson – 6

While he found a lot of time and space on the ball on the left-flank, we were dejected at Andrew Robertson’s delivery for a large duration of the game. He possesses a lethal left-foot that went missing for large durations of the game against Everton and the Scot threatened the visitor’s defence only in bits and pieces.

James Milner – 6

Milner was industrious as ever and linked up well with the likes of Robertson and Mane. He was very tidy with his passing, clocking a passing accuracy in excess of 90% and came close to unlocking a tightly knit Everton defence on a number of occasions with his movement on and off the ball.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 7

Manchester City v Liverpool - Premier League
Chamberlain has settled in well at the club and is beginning to show his potential.

Deployed as the central attacking midfielder for the tie, Chamberlain showed why he deserves to play in the centre of the park. He worked hard and was effective as he constantly conjured up opportunities while also ensuring that he did his fair share of dirty work in the middle of the park.

Jordan Henderson – 6

What exactly does Henderson bring to this Liverpool line-up? The Liverpool captain can at best be described as a master of safe passes and is barely a leader of troops. While being industrious and tidy with his passing, Henderson failed to add to his side’s dominance in the centre of the park and could be termed guilty of not being enterprising enough with his side while they only had a tender lead of one goal.

Sadio Mane – 6

While threatening, Sadio Mane could be termed as one of the players guilty of handing Everton a lifeline in the game. The Reds were up by a single goal when Mane found time and space in the Everton half late in the 1st half but decided to go for glory instead of logic, thus costing his side a chance to double their lead and eventually 2 points.

Mohamed Salah – 8

Liverpool v Everton - Premier League
Is there a better attacker in the Premier League right now?

Is there a better player in the Premier League at the moment than Salah? The Egyptian was magical as he has been through the season and constantly poked and probed the Everton defence. Then came the moment of genius that has often been expected of Salah this season as he left 2 Everton defenders flat-footed before curling the ball beautifully beyond Pickford’s reach.

Dominic Solanke – 7

While he did not get on the score sheet, Solanke was amongst the impressive Liverpool players. The youngster was industrious, constantly stretched the Everton defence for time and space on the ball and linked up excellently with his attacking colleagues. Solanke is soon establishing himself amongst Liverpool’s attacking resources and should be ahead of Sturridge merely on his ability to link up well with the likes of Mane and Salah.

Substitutes

Roberto Firmino – 6

The Brazilian came on for Salah in the 67th minute but failed to have the desired level of impact despite his side dominating possession.

Philippe Coutinho – NA

Coutinho was brought on in the 78th minute with Liverpool level with Everton but the Brazilian drifted in and out of the game for the larger parts of the 12 minutes that he spent on the pitch.

Danny Ings – NA

Ings returned to Premier League action but it was perhaps too little too late for his liking.
