Liverpool FC: 3 steps away from glory

Liverpool

Liverpool now just 3 games away from the Premier League title

A scrappy win after one of their most disjointed performances of the season. But, at this stage of the season, with what is at stake, it is not the aesthetics that matter. It is about getting the job done. Something that Fabio Borini and co. prevented Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea from doing.

After winning the club’s biggest game since 1990 against City, Steven Gerrard issued a rallying cry saying that the title wouldn’t slip now. The title, if it comes, would mean a lot to Gerrard. From almost joining Chelsea, to deciding that he would win whatever he will only with his beloved Liverpool. That will, that loyalty does not come very easily. And today, the club stands with 3 hurdles between itself and possibly, its greatest ever victory.

After beating City, people would have expected Liverpool to thrash their bunnies from Norwich and have an easy outing. But no, it was anything but easy. Teams fighting relegation are scrapping for their lives, and games against them are the most difficult. Ask Man City and Chelsea about Sunderland.

Liverpool went into the game minus Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson. While Sturridge’s absence was not felt as much because of the sublime form that Raheem Sterling has been in, Henderson left a void that was hard to fill.

Henderson’s energy, his pressing, and his willingness to fight for the cause have been metronomic in Liverpool’s rise this season, and he will be sorely missed against Chelsea. Daniel Sturridge is also touch and go for the Chelsea clash, and if both of them miss out, then the starting eleven is likely to remain the same as against Norwich. But, Brendan Rodgers will have to change the system. He will have to go back to a 4-3-3, because Chelsea use their full backs really well, and a diamond gets caught out against teams that use the full width of the pitch.

Liverpool stand so close to glory, have arguably the best starting eleven in the league, but they have hardly anything to talk about in terms of squad depth. Liverpool are on the brink of something that modern day football has hardly seen. They are about to beat the money clubs, as they are called, with a dynamic young manager who has created a thrilling brand of attacking football.

The support that was afforded to them against City, by the Anfield faithful, needs to be multiplied multi-fold, when Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea come calling, because Liverpool Football Club at this moment needs their fans to see them across these last three hurdles. The least everyone at Anfield can do is sing their hearts out, will their team home. Recreate the atmosphere of the 70s and 80s, when Anfield used to be a dreaded place to visit.

On the pitch, the results are tapering over the cracks that are becoming visible. Simon Mignolet has hardly been assured. Glen Johnson has been frighteningly poor, and Lucas Leiva was pedestrian against Norwich.

But, this season is about one man, Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz. From almost leaving the club to becoming the first Liverpool striker since Ian Rush to score 30 or more goals in a season, Suarez has come a long way. Not only Suarez, but Jon Flanagan, Martin Skrtel, Henderson, and Joe Allen have all gone from nearly leaving the club, to helping it mount a serious title challenge after a long, long time.

Most Liverpool fans looked resigned to losing Suarez to his desire to achieve bigger and better things, but now, as things stand, he might be achieving those bigger and better things with a Liverbird upon his chest. For Steven Gerrard, this one title would mean more than 10 other titles had they come in other colours other than the Liverpool Red.

For Liverpool FC, this title is more than just a title. It is the satisfaction of having achieved it against all odds. It is the belief that the entire squad has shown, despite finishing 7th last season. It is about the 96 angels we lost 25 years ago.

Liverpool FC will go again!
