Reports: Liverpool FC want Jurgen Klopp to succeed Brendan Rodgers

Jurgen Klopp is likely to succeed Rodgers at Anfield

Following the announcement of Brendan Rodger’s sacking from Liverpool football club, it has been reported that the former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp is the leading candidate to succeed the Northern Irishman at Anfield, according to Liverpool Echo. The Merseyside club made the announcement right after Liverpool played a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park against Everton on Sunday.

There has been a lot of rumours and speculation over the past few weeks about Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti taking up the next managerial job at Anfield. The ECHO also understands the club has shortlisted another candidate, Frank de Boer but the former Borussia Dortmund manager is viewed as the ideal replacement by Anfield’s hierarchy.

The 48-year-old German has been out of management since he stepped down at Dortmund back in May but he has made it known in recent weeks that he’s more than willing to work in the Premier League to mark his return.

Klopp has been a renown and decorated manager over the years with Dortmund, having won 2 Bundesliga titles and has led Dortmund to the finals of Champions League 2013. It’s no surprise the German is hungry for success and is eager to hold talks with the Reds.

Replacement ensured by the owners before Liverpool face Spurs

The Northern Irishman was sacked an hour after the Merseyside derby which ended 1-1 at end of the final whistle at Goodison Park. Liverpool are without a manager at the moment but the owners Fenway Sports Group are expected to bring in a replacement before the club’s away game to Tottenham on October 17.

Club owner, John W Henry along with chairman Tom Werner and Gordon released the following statement:

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.”

“All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.”

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.”

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Rodgers made a bright start with Liverpool but faded towards the end

Brendan Rodgers was appointed the Liverpool manager back in 2013.

Rodgers earned his recognition when he had a successful spell at Swansea City, who he had got promoted into the Premier League. He then succeeded Kenny Dalglish back in June 2012. The 42-year-old made a decent start to his managerial career at Anfield by finishing seventh in 2012/13 season. The following season he came close to winning the league and came within two points of ending the club’s 24-year wait for a 19th English league title.

Under Rodgers, the Reds scored 101 league goals and collected 84 points in the 2013/14 Premier League campaign. Unfortunately, their title hopes were given a big blow when they suffered a defeat to Chelsea at home while Manchester City went running with the league trophy.

Ever since then, nothing has gone right for Rodgers. His star striker Luis Suarez left for Barcelona and Liverpool finished sixth in the league. Their miserable campaign ended with a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium. The club owners kept faith with the Northern Irishman and he was given £80million to spend on new players, but it didn’t pay any reward for Rodgers who had picked up 12 points from eight games this season.
