Liverpool to wear special '96' insignia on jerseys during league clash against Manchester City

Liverpool take on title rivals Manchester City on Sunday in an emotionally charged atmosphere at Anfield. The weekend will mark 25 years since that fateful afternoon in Sheffield where 96 fans lost their lives at the Hillsborough stadium.

As a mark of respect for the victims of the tragedy, a series of events has been planned by the Merseyside club before and during their clash against Manchester City.

The players will be wearing a special insignia on their jerseys for the next three games, starting Sunday, as a mark of respect. The jersey will have a patch on it which will read ‘ Never Forgotten, 25 Years’ with 96 being written in the middle.

A huge mosaic will also be held up by the Kop which will read ’96 25 years’. The game will kick off at 1.37 PM(BST) with a minute silence at the start of the game.

Before the game, a huge patch will be laid out at the centre circle of the pitch in memory of the 96. Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush will be handed over a wreath of flowers and 96 red and blue roses by two Manchester City legends.

The Hillsborough Memorial service is set to be held on Tuesday which will mark exactly 25 years since the disaster. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and Everton manager Roberto Martinez will both be present and speak at the occasion.

The ongoing inquests into the Hillsborough disaster have been laid off until the end of the month as a mark of respect to the victims and their families.
