It was stupid of van Persie

Robin van Persie’s dramatic last minute equaliser against Chelsea at Old Trafford may have pleased most people associated with Manchester United but according to manager Louis van Gaal the celebration was “stupid”. Van Persie ran towards the crowd, took off his shirt and threw it in the air and got a yellow card from referee Phil Dowd in the process as is the norm.

Chelsea put up a resolute defence after taking a lead through Didier Drogba in the 53rd minute but a last minute foul on Angel Di Maria got Branislav Ivanovic sent off for a second yellow card giving United a free-kick in a dangerous position in the 94th minute. Fellaini’s shot was saved by Courtois but the Dutch striker scored the rebound in scenes similar to what Old Trafford has witnessed many a times before.

“He did a stupid reaction after the goal. You can be excited but you don’t have to pull your shirt off because then you have a yellow card. It is not so smart.” a pragmatic van Gaal said.

Deserved more than a point

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss claimed that United deserved all three points. “Yes, you know that. I think José Mourinho knows that also,” the Dutchman said.

Despite going toe-to-toe with the league leaders, the ‘Iron Tulip‘ said it was not his side’s best performance.

“I have said that to the boys. It was not our best performance and that is a pity because at this moment you have to show yourself against the better teams but in spite of that we have created a lot of chances – much more than Chelsea. They have created one chance in the first half and before the goal there was the Hazard chance which David de Gea stopped fantastically.

“The corner kick [for Drogba’s goal] was a lack of communication and that is why they scored. That is always the difference in such games.” he said.

I don’t want to talk about the referee

The opposition manager though was slightly less cheerful.

Mourinho said he doesn’t wish to talk about the referee Phil Dowd but then cited several incidents through the match which he was unhappy about.

“I have no comments on the referee”

“I prefer just to say my feeling is we had a good first half and a fantastic second half. You know I cannot speak. Some can and some don’t and one of the ones who cannot speak is me because you know what happens to me when I do.

“I prefer not to speak about the second yellow card because if I do I have to start in the first half and go through many, many things that happened in the game. The penalty [not given] on Ivanovic, the accumulation of cards, the fouls he didn’t give to us, the throw-ins right in front of me and the fourth official and the linesman that he gave in the other direction.”

Van Persie meanwhile thanked Manchester United fans for the support by posting on hisofficial Twitter account.
