Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva joined the plaudits for Brazil defender David Luiz’s wonder goal against Colombia, taking to twitter to praise his international teammate. The Liverpool man also hinted that the player has silenced his doubters.

Luiz scored the second goal in Brazil’s 2-1 win over Colombia with a long-range free kick into the top corner, prompting praise from Liverpool’s Lucas as well as a semi-final tie with Germany. The midfielder tweeted his praise at the goal, taking the chance to take a swipe at Luiz’s critics in the process.

Brazil defender Luiz, known as much for his attacking play as for his defensive work, moved from Chelsea to Paris Saint Germain earlier in the summer in a deal worth a reported £40-50 million, making him the world’s most expensive defender. His goal against Colombia was his second of the tournament, having played in every minute of the host nation’s World Cup campaign.

Lucas, on the other hand, failed to make Luis Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad, following a disappointing season at club level. The 27-year-old was restricted to just 20 league starts at Liverpool by a combination of injury and the form of his midfield peers.
