Man United’s £18m Star, David De Gea, can be world class – states Red Devils coach

Manchester United goalkeeping coach Dave Woods believes David De Gea has everything it takes to become one of the very best goalkeepers in the world.

The Spaniard has come under criticism once more after his recent mistake against Stoke City, but Woods has hit out at critics and insists that the former Atletico Madrid star just needs to ignore the criticism and focus on his game.

“David has got everything that you need to be the best and he has just got to keep doing what he is doing at the moment,” said Woods to The Metro.

“It is about achieving a level of consistency, which he is now doing but I don’t want to tempt fate. ‘He has everything needed to be up there with the best.”

Woods also reserved praise for United’s backup goalkeepers Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, citing their attitudes in the dressing room as ‘first-class’.

“They have been absolutely first-class,” Woods added. “From my point of view, they have taken the training on board, worked hard and I don’t think they have moaned!

“They have worked really hard and we are forming that coach-player relationship that you need.”

De Gea has honed his abilities as a shot-stopper since his arrival in Manchester, with an average of 2.22 saves per game and 1.67 saves per goal.
