Manchester City complete £12m deal for FC Porto's midfielder Fernando

Fernando on his way to Manchester City

Manchester City have confirmed the transfer of Fernando from Porto for a fee of €15 million (£12 million), according to Porto, as reported by Goal.com.

Fernando was previously linked with Chelsea, who will be disappointed to hear that he has signed for their Premier League rivals. The Blues will, however, take solace in the signing of former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

The 26-year-old former Porto man is City’s second signing of the summer after Bacary Sagna completed a free transfer from Arsenal. City had previously expressed significant interest in Fernando and teammate Eliaquim Mangala in January, though the deal could not be completed before the window shut. Fernando then signed a new deal with Porto, seemingly tying him to the club.

Fernando is a talented midfield anchor, and will compete with the likes of Yaya Toure and Fernandinho for a starting position in the City midfield. Last season’s champions will be looking to replicate their success this season as Manuel Pellegrini enters his second season in his role as City manager.
