Manchester United have reportedly edged ahead in the race for lethal front-man Edinson Cavani and the Uruguayan is heading to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Star.

Louis van Gaal has identified the former Napoli man as his main summer target this summer to bolster his striking force and according to reports Cavani is edging closer to a move, with an offer of £56 million to be made.

Cavani is disillusioned with life in Paris as he has been deployed in an unfamiliar role. The Uruguayan international plays wider than he did for Napoli, due to teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s supreme form in the middle. Cavani has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a couple of months now after reports emerged that he was unhappy with life in France.

United made contact with Paris Saint-Germain last month for Cavani and that move could bare fruition as van Gaal’s side are edging closer to the signing.

Cavani is currently at the World Cup with his national side preparing for the showpiece in Brazil and has refused to comment on speculation surrounding his future.

Van Gaal is currently managing the Netherlands side, but will take over United during their pre-season tour.
