Manchester United fans had to bring down a banner which mocked Steven Gerrard in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, after being informed that it could cause a fire hazard.

Come back when you have won one

United notched the victory with goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Van Persie and avenged their last season’s home game 3-0 defeat against Liverpool. One set of United supporters unfurled a banner which mocked Liverpool captain Gerrard’s untimely and costly slip last season, which gifted the deciding goal to Demba Ba and the Premier League title to Manchester City.

The slip gave Chelsea to victory enabling City to get take advantage of the dropped points and ended hopes of the Anfield faithful of getting their hands on the title for the first time since 1990. Tthe banner depicts Gerrard kneeling down after falling on the ground with the infamous slip and with the quote ‘Au Revoir Gerrard, Come Back When You’ve Won One.” This message alludes to the 34-year-old’s zero Premier League titles.

The banner is an imitation of a similar type unfurled at Anfield in 1993, which mocked Manchester United first league win in 26 years, and ridiculed talisman Eric Cantona with the message,

‘Au Revoir Cantona and Man United, Come Back When You’ve Won 18!’

Reports suggest that the banner at Old Trafford was pulled down in some moments of it being unfurled because of health and safetly regulations which prohibited the use of banners over a certain size.

A Manchester United spokesperson told revealed the reason behind the stopping of the unfurling of the banner, as:

“Any banner over a certain size would need a fire certificate. This banner would have contravened the ground regulations.”
