What's the story?

Manchester United have made a bright start to the 2017/18 season and now reports in German outlet Sports Bild (via Manchester Evening News) claim that the Red Devils are favourites to win the race to sign Confederations Cup hero and German superstar Leon Goretzka.

The 22-year-old Schalke midfielder is wanted by all the top clubs across Europe including Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. A player in the ilk of Paul Scholes, Goretzka has been in fine form for both the German national team and his club side putting in stunning performances from the central midfield position.

Still only 22, but already one of the best players in Schalke, Goretzka has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League. Both Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger are said to be huge fans of the midfielder's talents although Goretzka himself is said to prefer a move to Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

Mourinho is determined to add some strength and steel to his midfield and Goretzka along with Pogba and Matic will surely make a formidable midfield for the Red Devils.

The heart of the matter

Capable of spraying passes and scoring some spectacular long-range goals, Goretzka is widely considered to be one of the best young talents in world football at the moment. Although the midfielder himself is keen on a move to Barcelona, Manchester United's ability to pay close to £62 million could sway the deal in the Premier League club's favour.

A stylish player who is ideally suited to the pace and physicality of the Premier League, Goretzka will be a valuable asset and Mourinho is ready to pay whatever it takes to beat Arsenal and other top clubs across Europe to sign the promising German midfielder.

Author's take

Although Barcelona and Bayern Munich have long been linked with a move for Goretzka, the Premier League's spending power means that clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are more than capable of bidding more than their European rivals.

United seem extremely determined to sign the German international and we might see the German strut his stuff at Old Trafford in the future.
