Manchester United dismiss Real Madrid's latest claims on De Gea transfer

A Manchester United spokesperson lambasted Real Madrid for attempting to place the blame on the English club for the failure to sign David De Gea in the 2015 summer transfer window, according to The Telegraph. Florentino Perez spoke to Spanish radio Cadena Ser earlier and seemed to criticise the Premier League club’s ability to deal with big transfers.

The two clubs have a long history of transfers and failed moves as well. The biggest move they have brokered between them was one that saw Cristiano Ronaldo move to the Bernabeu for £80 million, but they’ve seen moves for the likes of Fabio Coentrao fall apart in the same fashion as David De Gea’s deal but not nearly as spectacularly.

The fact that David De Gea’s much-hyped move did not go through on the final day of the transfer window has left a bad taste in the mouth of all those who were involved. It spurred a back and forth between the two clubs that started with official statements on the incident first emerging from the Real Madrid camp to be followed by a rebuttal from Manchester United.

Now, the Red Devils have responded to another shot fired in their direction by Florentino Perez through Cadena Ser, accusing the club of “lack of experience”. A United spokesperson reiterated the club’s stand saying the facts were in their favour and that Real Madrid would do well to take responsibility for their action.

He said: “The facts speak for themselves. The FA are prepared to back our case that documents were in on time.

“We all like to blame others but if you let one slip through your fingers into the back of the net, then ultimately the culpability is yours.”

Neither club seems to be willing to take the blows sitting down as a rivalry seems to be developing between the two off the pitch. There has been some bad blood between the two clubs in the past but nothing as intense as this transfer saga. It remains to be seen if either side will be willing to let it go or how long they will continue to exchange barbs before they can arrive at a truce.

The future of the Spanish goalkeeper now remains shrouded in mystery as Perez himself admitted and reports are now emerging that De Gea could sign an extension at United. It would be a complete U-turn on the custodian’s part but stranger things have happened in football.
