Giggs may soon step into management

Ryan Giggs’ has been rumoured to be in line for a role at Swansea City, with the Welsh club set to offer the former Manchester United wing wizard the manager’s position. Current head coach Francesco Guidolin’s position is under serious threat in the eyes of many fans.

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins is keen to dispose of Guidolin’s services, with the Italian coach’s job only saved by the new American owners of the club, Kaplan and Levien, who were reluctant to make a change so early in their regime, as they strived for stability.

Long term target of Swansea

Recent reports, however, shed light to the fact that Guidolin’s days as head coach of the Premier League club look increasingly numbered, and it appears that he will be sacked before the next international break in October.

Giggs has been a target of Jenkins for quite a while now and reports suggest that initial contact between the parties has been established. It remains to be seen, however, if Giggs will be willing to accept the offer, as he searches for the perfect job to kick-start his career as a manager.

The Welshman had a short time managing Manchester United’s first team – his interim spell sandwiched between the ill-fated appointment of David Moyes, and the slightly better but ultimately unsuccessful spell under Louis Van Gaal.

Ryan Giggs may be a hero in the eyes of Manchester United fans for what he did as a player, but his managerial career is yet to get off the ground.

The toughest job in football

There is an oft-repeated stat that says more than half the coaches who get sacked from their first job in management, do not get another chance to showcase their tactical nous.

However, an even more intriguing point to take note of is that managers who fail in their second job, have more or less no chance (about 10%) of making the grade at the highest level. Not even a glittering playing career can save one from that fate.

Roy Keane, Giggs’ longtime teammate, who had a highly successful career, can attest to both the aforementioned statements.

Giggs is highly knowledgable, given his two and a half decades in the game, and has studied under some of the best managers in the business, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Louis Van Gaal.

It will be interesting to see how the Premier League legend fares in management if he does indeed take the Swansea City hot seat.
