Reports: Manchester United missed out on Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus

Marco Reus was quoted £60m for Manchester United sale

Manchester United had made an attempt to include Borussia Dortmund’s star Marco Reus on the Adnan Januzaj loan deal in the last hours of the transfer deadline, reports ESPN. However, the Red Devils could not meet Dortmund’s asking price of £60 million for the German international.

United manager Louis van Gaal had been insistent on adding another attacker to partner the likes of Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, but the Dutch coach snubbed the opportunity of signing the Borussia Dortmund star. Instead, AS Monaco’s Anthony Martial was brought in for a hefty price of £36 million in the final hours of the deadline day, but Van Gaal had explored the option of adding Marco Reus on top of the teenager’s signing.

Dortmund were not completely adamant to Marco Reus’ sale, but the Old Trafford outfit were willing to pay up to £50 million for the German forward (£10 million less than the price quoted by the German side) and backed away eventually from a possible deal.

Reus had been hampered by injury setbacks last season, netting eleven goals and adding six assists to his name over the course of the campaign. But, the German international has been in sublime form for the Yellow Army this season scoring two goals in three starts in the Bundesliga.

United decided to go for Martial instead

Sealing the signature of the highly-rated Dortmund forward would have been good business for United who are lacking goal scoring threat up front having scored only three goals from four games this season.

At the moment, captain Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s only recognised striker at Old Trafford while the club has seen the departure of their Mexican striker, Javier Hernandez. Bayer Leverkusen signed the 27-year-old on a three-year contract.

Van Gaal has brought in a replacement for the departed player with Anthony Martial from AS Monaco, who scored eight goals in 31 Ligue 1 appearances last season. His performance at the Emirates with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal in Champions League quarter-finals was acknowledged by coaches and fans all over Europe.

Despite the major singing of Martial by United on transfer deadline day, the focus was all on United’s misunderstanding with Real Madrid over a possible deal for David De Gea, with both clubs releasing a statement and blaming each other for the collapse in the deal.
